Public displays of anti-Asian hatred and violence are happening all too frequently. In fact, their occurrence is taking place at an alarming rate; so much so that local, state and national officials are using their platforms to bring awareness of theses incidents of violence and mounting programs to address them . On this edition of talking with Henrietta, my guests and I discuss the history of anti-Asian hate in the U.S. and share steps we can all take to prevent it. Our discussion on this show is one in a series of taped discussions produced by the East Palo Alto Center for Community Media's Stop the Hate Media Campaign, which is funded by a grant from the State of California and administered by the California State Library.

The coronavirus, aka COVID-19, has impacted all of our lives. For many, it is and has been a stressful time, since we've been forced to adjust to some of the major changes that the virus has caused, like having to wear face masks and practice social distancing. For some, the rising death and unemployment rates, the uncertainty about the future and the fears we might have about our own health and that of those around us add more stress to the stress, which many were already feeling before the coronavirus appeared. On this edition of Talking with Henrietta, my five guest discuss what they are doing to adjust to life as we now know it and what you can do to achieve balance and well-being while living during the coronavirus.

Preparing for Flooding During a Drought:Talking with Henrietta

California and parts of the Bay Area, in particular, have in the past had exceptionally warm winters with long dry spells. But things do have a way of changing. Last year, back to back storms hit the Bay Area in November and December and brought heavy rains, winds and flooding. At the start of January 2019, several storms brought flash floods and high winds. So, is the Bay Area able to withstand major storms without the significant flooding to homes that occurred during the floods of 1986, 96-97, 2005 and 2012. On this show, my three guests - Gary Kremen, Len Materman and Dennis Parker - discuss some of the recently completed flood protections that have been put into place to protect cities on the Mid-peninsula. The murder of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer on a BART train platform on New Years Day in 2009 made him a larger than life symbol. His murder ushered in some major changes in the U.S's law enforcement agencies. On this edition of Talking with Henrietta, Grant's uncle, Cephus (Uncle Bobby X) Johnson, his wife, Beatrice Johnson and Minister Keith Muhammad discuss some of the nationwide laws that were enacted following Grant's murder. Over the past few years, the public has seen many news reports and protests over the shootings of unarmed men by the police. These shootings, of mostly black men, led to the Black Lives Movement. In many cases, we have seen the reactions expressed by the mothers, wives, sisters and children of the victims. But, we seldom see reports with the victim’s male relatives that show how they are dealing with their experience of loss. On this show, I talk to male relatives of victims of police shootings Cephus Johnson, also known as Uncle Bobby X, who is the uncle of Oscar Grant and Richard Perez, who is the father of Richard “Pedie” Perez, who was shot by police in Richmond in 2014. Social activist and artist JT Faraji joined our in studio conversation.

Talking with Henrietta: What Can We Expect Next?

This past February a thousand people marched in the streets of East Palo Alto, CA to end an upsurge in violence in that city. Shortly after the big march, more than 300 youth met during a teen summit to share their ideas about the city with local, county and state officials. In this video excerpt, Henrietta J. Burroughs talks with several community organizers involved with both the march and the summit to discuss whether the two events will have any lasting value for East Palo Alto and what the public can expect next.
