Damaged sidewalks pose pedestrian hazards across East Palo Alto

A quarter of East Palo Alto’s 152 damaged sidewalks could pose a hazard to the city’s pedestrians.  AI

For pedestrians on some East Palo Alto streets, a simple walk down the block can mean navigating cracked pavement, uneven concrete and other sidewalk hazards. A citywide look at sidewalk conditions shows the problem is especially pronounced on Camellia Drive and in neighborhoods along Willow Road, which have some of the most damaged sidewalks in the city. 

There are 152 damaged sidewalk sections in the city, according to data provided by the East Palo Alto Department of Public Works. A quarter of these sidewalk sections are damaged in such a way that could pose a hazard for pedestrians. 

According to Cartier Pham, the assistant public works engineer at the East Palo Alto Department of Public Works, “The Public Works Department is currently undertaking a citywide sidewalk inventory and replacement study that includes the latest available information on sidewalk conditions and repair needs throughout the City." 

Pham said that the study will then be presented to the Public Works and Transportation Commission (PWTC) in September after which next steps including a plan to address the issues will be determined. As of now, however, East Palo Alto's Public Works department does not have an established schedule of sidewalk repairs.
