A week after a local march protesting racial profiling and the passage of a resolution to end the practice, attention is now turning to additional steps that can be taken to deal with the issue. "EPA Peace & Unity presents "What's Going
On"
"What's Going On" is a six-episode
series that is designed to provide a platform for today's collective
voices within a multi-ethnic Urban Youth and Young Adult growing up
in the East Palo Alto community. The series aims towards breaking a
culture of silence and building bridges of communication among young
people; it is a journey towards revitalizing the way we interact and
how people view us.
Youth and young adults are engaged as guests on the panel, audience
members and invited to perform live in the studio at the closing of
the show. This is a contribution to the freedom and independence of
a new Urban Youth and the young voices that remain silent throughout
in the world.
Episode 3 will be a community conversation with teens and young adults
a bout the influence of alcohol and drugs. Doug Fort will host the show
and speak with teens who will share their experiences with addictive
substances. David Lewis, Co-founder of Free of Last, an alcohol and
rehab agency in East Palo Alto, will join Doug and his guests.

On this show, we look at the harmful effects current immigration policies
are having on area residents and we discuss how pending legislation
in the U.S. Congress might change immigration laws.

of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Eleanor Clement Glass, the
foundation's Chief Giving Officer and Pat Bresee, Vice Chair of the
foundation's Board of Directors.

Tasers: Are They a Viable Option?
It is estimated that at least 250 people nationwide have died after
they have been hit by tasers that were shot at them by the police. The
Palo Alto Taser Task Force voted to recommend that the Palo Alto City
Council allow its city's police department to buy and use tasers. If
this permission is given, then many feel that tasers will most likely
be used on residents from East Palo Alto, causing unnecessary deaths,
rather than saving lives as taser supporters argue.
Aram James, a former public defender and Donald Mendoza, a member on
the Palo Alto Taser Task Force share their opposing perspectives concerning

Doug Fort, the executive director of For Youth By Youth (FYBY), an
East Palo Alto nonprofit, hosted a workshop called How to Get out
of the Game during the Teen Summit, which was held in East Palo Alto
in February 2007. The workshop was designed to dissuade young people
from joining gangs and, if they were in a gang, it was designed to give
them tips on getting out.
The workshop proved so popular, that Marina Latu, one of the organizers of t East palo Alto Peace March and Rally produced the workshop on video.

A Call to Action
While there are powerful medications for those who have the HIV virus
and AIDS and while much has been done to prevent the HIV virus from
spreading, both the virus and AIDS are increasing in minority communities.
Given local concerns about the AIDS epidemic, the Rev. Mary Frazier,
Connie Burgess, Luisa Buada and Larry Moody talk with Henrietta J. Burroughs
about the spread of the disease and an upcoming program designed to

What are the Next Steps?
This past February a thousand people marched in the streets of East
Palo Alto, CA to end an upsurge in violence in that city. Shortly after
the big march, more than 300 youth met during a teen summit to share
their ideas about the city with local, county and state officials. On
this show, Henrietta J. Burroughs talks with several community organizers
involved with the march and the summit to discuss whether the two events
will have any lasting value for East Palo Alto and what the public can

The Local Impact of Dr. Wangari Mathai
In April 2006, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Wangari Mathai, visited
both Palo Alto and East Palo Alto and encouraged both city's residents
to plant trees. Now 10 months later, five area residents discuss the
value of her visit and the impact it is now having on Palo Alto and
on East Palo, in particular. East Palo Alto City Manager Alvin James,
Catherine Martineau, the Ex. Dir. of Canopy, Marty Deggeller , the former
Chair of Canopy, Dave Muffly, a certified arborist and Genevra Ornelas,
the program director at Canopy share their views with Henrietta Burroughs
on Talking with Henrietta. The program will begin airing Thursday, February
