Jeanne Cuffey Tatum
October 18, 1943 - September 19, 2010

Jeanne was a classic. To quote an old friend, "She was a cute, feisty, funny, no-BS woman", who could have an easy going manner, BUT always with a little edge. Born October 18, 1943 to Nancy and Wellington Cuffey in Smithfield, Virginia, Jeanne was raised in East Orange, New Jersey where she attended high school and excelled in every subject. She married young, and had one devoted son, Michael Arrington of East Palo Alto.

In her 20's Jeanne moved to California. In 1973, she met the love of her life, Richard Tatum, and they spent 37-years devoted to one another. They prized family, friends, music, theatre, the 4gers, community organizing, camping, cooking, bargain hunting, entertaining and enjoying an ice cold can of Pepsi. The two, affectionately known as Frick and Frack, shared a passion for travel. They explored the Caribbean Isles, Mexico, Canada, China, Thailand, Belize, Costa Rica,~ Panama, and Ecuador.

Jeanne was a very talented, passionate and strong woman. She was a writer, regional actress, a singer-songwriter with an incredible 5-octave range, a community activist, a nonpareil administrator, a fiscal manager, and one heck of a dominoes player.

For all who knew her, she was a fiercely loyal friend. As a passionate, strong woman, Jeanne actively advocated social change, championing children, youth and family welfare issues.

Although small in stature, her contributions to countless efforts to improve quality of life in East Palo Alto were gigantic. She worked quietly in the background as one of East Palo Alto's unsung heroes and a committed community builder at or for Nairobi College, the Community Development Institute, the East Palo Alto African American Leadership Summit and One East Palo Alto, to name just a few organizational beneficiaries.

Indeed, in her community building capacity, considered by many to be one of her greatest legacies, Jeanne was a philanthropist extraordinaire - one who more than generously gave of her time, talents and treasure to make sure the world knew of the true greatness within EPA. A tower of strength, both to family and friends, Jeanne became a role model for many and will live on through time immemorial as an East Palo Alto treasure.

Jeanne is survived by her loving husband Richard, her beloved son Michael Arrington, and her stepson Rashaan; her grandchildren Stephon, Preston and Dominique; her cherished cousins throughout the East Coast; her in-laws, Stephanie Tatum, Sylvia and Roosevelt Alexander, and Woodrow Tatum; her nieces and nephews Tazamisha, Tacuma, Tabari, Rachel, Veronica, Christina, Nichole, Jennifer, Joel, Brandon, Taylor, Andre and Johnny; and a community of friends too long to list. An extraordinary human being, Jeanne Tatum will be dearly missed. The Tatum family asks that in lien of flowers or contributions a donation is made to:

Remembrances

Hi, my name is Carlianne, I'm in the Shrunken Headman club at San Jose State. I saw your list here and wanted to add that we have dwnairg sessions on Fridays as well. Except it's from 2:00 5:00. I'm not sure of the room number, but it's on the 3rd floor, all the way to the right. I hope that helps

Once I received a call offering me a decent sum to turn for a pianist for a chamber music concert. I was pleased to finally get paid for something I'd been doing pro bono for years. I got there early and met with the pianist. He seemed high-strung but some people are before a concert. I clarified repeat issues with him and he assured me he was a clear nodder. The concert began and I soon saw why he was so high-strung; his mediocre technique and limited musicality made him a bad choice to play the well-known Beethoven and Brahms trios he was tackling (almost literally, football player style). We got towards the end of the first page and he did not nod. I figured, Maybe he likes memorize the beginning of the next page and have late turns. Nope as we reached the last two beats he abruptly turned his heard toward me and, in a low, gruff voice barked, Turn! This disagreeable ritual was repeated for most of the performance. I thought it might have been less disruptive for him and the audience to nod as he said. No such luck. I made it through and didn't mess it up, but he really unnerved me and I dare say I was very deserving of my pay that evening.

Insurance, sec code bounced twiceNot being much of a wine drinker, my hard earned drinking dollars continue to prop up the Stolichnaya, Imperial Standard & Absolut factories. I’m yet to find a drinkable Vodka in the cheapies section. However I think your point does hold to a degree. Many of my mates in the Non Gov sector are tightening belts and paying down debt.It of course is far far far worse in the People’s Republic of Amerika. If you want a grim indicator of how things are going on the otherside of the Pacific check out the 2nd hand boat listings. Hundred thousand dollar + boats are being listed for half retail price, and being sold for even less.I think Goresh makes a good point, it depends where you draw your plimsoll line. If credit fuelled binges on electric eyeball massagers and 23 room Bogan-Villas is your benchmark of Normal, then any step back from the consumerist brink could be interpreted as a catstrophic slowdown.

One of the reasons I moved to Oz was because I loved Ozzie wine back in the UK. The chance to come where it was grown and buy it cheaper was a bonus for me. Then, when I got here, I discovered that Oz wine is actually more expensive here than it is in the UK. Bummer! As for freight-forwarding from the States – been doing that for two years. We tend to buy a bunch of stuff every two months or so and have it shipped over. Saves an absolute fortune – especially on high-end electrical goods. Only pain is having to buy a bunch of power inverters to run the Yank kit but, even with that and shipping and commission to our agent in the US, we usually pay less than half it would cost us over here.Cheers

Oh Lovely! Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City has a farmers market usually in the spring through the fall. It hasn’t started yet but would love to see you there. Hospital main number is 650 299 2000 maybe asked to be connected to someone in hospital administration. Also, you probably could just drive up to parking lot (don’t know how truck rules work) and with a little notice you’d have plenty of customers.
