April and Year-to-Date Crime Statistic Report

April 2009 compared to April 2008

Homicides are up from 1 to 3

Summary:
So far this year violence and overall crime is down. We do see a slight increase in robberies and larcenies. Homicides have also increased from 1 to 3 this time last year, but we are extremely optimistic that homicides will be reduced from last year (there were 5) based on the dramatic reductions in shootings (down 40%).

The Department is completing a “ShotSpotter” analysis report based on over a year’s worth of data. The report will identify the top locations and hot-spot areas in which gunshots are detected, as well as the most common days of the week and hours of the day. The Department will launch a special “ShotSpotter” operation to target those locations and identify and arrest those who carry and discharge firearms in our community.
