Announcement Regarding the National Night Out:

National Night Out (NNO) is a nationwide event that started in 1984 and is annually held on the first Tuesday in August. It is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Once again the East Palo Alto Police Department is encouraging residents to participate in this noble event which will be held on Tuesday, August 4th this year. Traditionally, to participate in the event, you simply turn on your porch light and hold a vigil in your front yard during the designated hours of 7pm -10pm.

In light of the difficult economic times and due to a lack of inquiries from residents, our Police Department did not initiate a large event for the National Night Out this year as we have done in previous years. Instead, we are encouraging residents to focus on the fundamental meaning of the event by turning on their porch light during the designated time to unite symbolically with neighborhoods and law enforcement agencies in this nationwide demonstration that we are united in our fight against crime. Sometimes when there are large promotional events with entertainment, free giveaways and the like the meaning behind the event is lost in the excitement of the moment. This year, as we simply turn on our porch lights we can reflect upon what this means to our Nation, to our City, to our neighbors and to ourselves. What can we do to improve the quality of life in East Palo Alto and what can we do to foster good relationships with our neighbors and law enforcement?

If your neighborhood Block Club/Watch Group has already planned a NNO gathering this year, please let us know as we would love to support your efforts.
