The East Palo Arts Initiative, a program of FOR YOUTH BY YOUTH, in collaboration with Collective Roots will hold a series of musical performances at the East Palo Alto Community Farmers' Market every Sunday through the summer. Find out more about the concerts.


EPA's Renters Are Mobilizing - July 26 and August 2, 2008

Second Annual Pacific Islands Higher Education Recruitment Program - July 31 and August 1, 2008

Outstanding African Americans Exhibit - through March 2009

The San Mateo County History Museum is hosting a number of temporary exhibits. One of these exhibits is called "African Americans in San Mateo County." This exhibit will run through October 5, 2008. Within the exhibit is a special "Outstanding African Americans in San Mateo County" section which will run through March 2009. For more information, contact Diane Rummel at (650)299-0104.

Action for East Palo Alto's Streets - July 9, 2008

The Youth Leaders of Our Community (YLOOC), a Peninsula Interfaith Action youth group, is working hard to get sidewalks on every street in East Palo Alto. The group is launching its first "action" at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in East Palo Alto to bring the goal of sidewalks to fruition. Details about the YLOOC event are available in English and in Spanish.

Assemblymember Ira Ruskin is hosting a free "Dollars and Sense" financial workshop this Saturday, June 28th from 10:00am to Noon at the East Palo Alto City Hall at 2415 University Avenue. The workshop will give residents an opportunity to learn from financial experts, free and without any sales pitches, about debt management, retirement planning, paying for college, saving and investing.

Activity Guide Training - March 28, 2008

East Palo Alto now has a web-based activity guide which is now available for local organizations to post their upcoming events. All are invited to receive hands on training to learn how to use the guide on the web. The sponsors of the activity guide say that it will be a real plus in keeping the community informed. Battling Childhood Diseases

Nearly one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Even more alarming is that childhood obesity is associated with Type II diabetes, increases the risk of coronary heart disease, lowers self-esteem, and affects relationships with peers. Find out about an upcoming program on March 31 that 200 Junior Leagues put together to educate children on the importance of eating well and staying healthy. See Kids in the Kitchen.

"Bare Witness"

A pictorial exhibit featuring the late Gordon Parks will be displayed at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University starting March 21. Parks who died in 2006 at the age of 93 has been described as a unique renaissance man since he was a filmmaker, author, musician, and publisher. Finding Foster Care

Current statistics show that on average, there are approximately 467 children and youths in the foster care system in San Mateo County, California at any given time. To find out why this is the case and what needs to be done to help more of the county's children, click here.

Quest Learning Center Spelling Bee

The San Mateo County Library's Quest Learning Center, located in the East Palo Alto Library, is hosting a spelling bee for Quest students on Thursday, February 15th, 2007. The event will take place from 4:30 - 6:00 PM in the Community Room, which is located across the hall from the East Palo Alto Library. The spelling bee is intended for 3rd through 9th grade students who are enrolled in the Quest after school program.

In order to make sure students learn new information that is relevant to them, the words chosen for the spelling bee are among the 1,000 most frequent words in texts from Grade 3 to 9. For more information about this event please contact Darwin Eustaquio at (650) 321-7712 x226.


A Special Presentation

In celebration of Black History Month, acoustic jazz bassist Marcus Shelby will present "Harriet Tubman and Jazz" -- a lecture and musical demonstration featuring a quartet with vocalist Faye Carol. For more information on the February 28 presentation, see the attached flyer.
