On February 06, 2009 at approximately 0036 hours, East Palo Alto Police Officers monitored gunshots in the 2400 block of Illinois Street. The Shotspotter System also alerted police officers to five gunshots in the 2400 block Illinois Street at approximately the same time police officers heard gunfire. Police officers responded to the 2400 block of Illinois Street to investigate the gunfire and Shotspotter System activation. Arriving, police officers noticed that a parked vehicle sustained damage consistent to bullet holes and they also located spent shell casings. Police officers checked the area thoroughly and weren’t able to locate a victim.
At approximately 0221 hours, the East Palo Alto Police Department received information from a local hospital that a gunshot victim arrived in the emergency room for medical treatment. Police Officers responded to the hospital emergency room and contacted a 39 year-old Hayward resident suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police officers discovered that the victim was on the 2400 block of Illinois Street earlier tonight when police officers heard gunshots and received a simultaneous Shotspotter System activation.
Details of the shooting are limited, but the shooting occurred as the victim rode a bicycle on the 2400 block of Illinois Street. A vehicle passed the victim as he rode his bicycle, the same vehicle that passed him turned around, stopped, and an unknown race suspect, wearing all black clothing ran toward him. The victim realized he may be in danger, abandoned his bicycle and ran away. When the victim arrived at a safe location, he realized that he was shot. The victim arranged for his own transportation to a local hospital emergency room where he was treated for multiple gunshot wounds. The victim is currently listed in stable condition. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
Detectives from the East Palo Alto Police Department Criminal Investigations Division are actively investigating this matter and are attempting to develop leads and a motive. Detectives from the East Palo Alto Police Department Criminal Investigations Division are also actively seeking witnesses who may have seen the crime.
